Communities want councillors to deal with community issues

The above statement is one I firmly believe. I have no political party affiliations, and I will be running as an independent candidate. My plan for representing the people of Division 10 is to listen to the people about their thoughts and concerns on local issues, to research these issues and to make an informed decision in council on these issues.

Over the last four years as a Douglas Shire councillor, I have come to realise that the community want their councillor to be hard working and diligent, responsive and possess strong leadership qualities. I possess all these qualities and will utilise them for the people of Division 10.

Douglas Shire Council has six councillors and one mayor, and Cairns City Council has 12 councillors and one mayor, making a total of 20 representatives. Under the new amalgamated Cairns Regional Council, there will be 10 councillors and one mayor.

Presently I have "call in for a chat" sessions at the Port Douglas Community Hall were I am available for anyone to call in and raise their issues and views with me face to face. This is something that I would continue to do at various venues within Division 10. I believe this is an important part of respresenting YOU and YOUR division effectively.

Throughout my working life I have obtained many skills that will be extremely useful in the position as Divison 10 Councillor, some of these include having a keen ear to listen, being highly organised and very keen to delve into problems to find a solution.

With modern technology ie: mobile phones, internet, etc distance becomes shortened. As an experienced Councillor I know the importance of being contactable for the people. As the Division 10 Councillor that will remain an issue of utmost importance, it has always been a part of my work ethic over many years.

There is a slogan The three R's - in local government speak this means "Roads, Rates and Rubbish". The job of a local council is no longer just roads, rates and rubbish. However, the community do need attention given to these very basic services that local councils appear to have forgotten about for far too long. The first priority in the Australian Local Government Roles and Responsibilities is infrastructure and property services, which includes local roads, footpaths, bridges, waste collection and drainage.

We are made very aware of the drainage issues facing us living in the tropics during the wet, therefore attention needs to be given to our drainage.

Footpaths, sufficient lighting. NEED ATTENTION

Maintenance on our local roads. NEED ATTENTION

Maintenance on our local parks and gardens. NEED ATTENTION

Lets NOT forget about the basics. The basics, is what local government is about. Sure, attention needs to given to the big picture stuff but DON'T forget about the basics along the way.

Division 10 is home to some of Australia's Premier Tourist Destinations, therefore we must look after the now, the basics and the future.
